Back Pain After Sitting

10/11/2020

One of the natural consequences of the quarantine is that everyone sits so much more now. Even if you are normally an active person. If you live and work in the same place naturally sit more.

I’ve personally felt more stiff at the end of the day from all my sitting. After about 2 weeks of working solely from home I realized how uncomfortable my kitchen chairs are….they are not meant to sit in for 8 hours….

About that time of the quarantine, I got a call from Katie who was having severe lower back pain.  “Why can’t I sit? I can't even sit for 5 minutes on my couch or in my recliner. I can sit for maybe 30 minutes on a hard chair. Why? “ Katie asked. She went on to tell me she had an intense tightness across her lower back all the time but after sitting for too long she had extra pressure on one side of her hip.  The pain was better in standing sometimes but then it hurt to put weight on one leg.
She found it very hard to concentrate on work already with her kids at home and now she was trying to work standing up which was hard. She was awkwardly  hunching over at the kitchen counter which was tiresome. Her back pain from sitting was driving her crazy. She’d tried a few stretches she found on the internet and tried to do a home exercise video thinking moving more would help. Katie said the back pain was less after trying these things but nothing was fully stopping the pain. She was fed up and just wanted to sit and relax on her couch to watch a movie with her family without wanting to cry after.

I started talking to Katie after she downloaded my free ebook which is why she tried the stretches and the exercise video. But since she was still having back pain after sitting she agreed to come in for an initial assessment to find the root cause of her back pain after sitting.

During the assessment I was able to see exactly where the pain was on her back. We reviewed the stretches and the strengthening exercises she tried and by making few tweaks to how she did those exercises she felt dramatically better. We discussed ways to change her work set up at the table to reduce her pain from sitting.  At her first follow up she was shocked at how much better she felt. It wasn’t 100% but she knew what she was doing was working. By the end of the treatment plan Katie was able to sit for a full movie with her family without paying for it later.
