Hi, I’m Molly with Your Goals Physical Therapy. I want to give a little tip on how to tell early on if you have a back issue.
And my example of this is, if you can't lay flat in your bed, like 100% flat on your back with your legs straight and your heads flat on your bed, then that is a very early sign that something in your lower back has a problem. Because most people ignore that pain since you can bend your knee or you can roll on your side, and that back pain goes away. So why would you pay any attention to this type of pain, you just adjust your position and the discomfort is gone.
The reason I know this is the start of a problem is because I see what happens five or 10 years down the line when that same problem has progressed.
It changes from just discomfort laying flat on your back to now you can't stand up all the way or you have to hold on to the grocery cart while you're walking in the grocery store because your back is so sore that you can't handle it. Your back hurts every time you sit down for too long, and then you try to get up. Or you can't sit at all because that back pain is so bad. The same reason that prevented you from lay flat in your bed five years earlier is now making it to where you have to sleep in your recliner.
I thought I would do this video to tell you about the initial signal your body gives you, just like the little light in your car that tells you you need gas before your car stops.
And of course, if we ignore that initial signal, we will have bigger problems that occur later on.
If you find that you're having pain in one position or while doing a specific activity and it lasts longer than two weeks, there is something mechanical going on. There is a reason that your body is giving you a warning.
That is what I want everybody to understand, so that they don't just go buy creams or don't just go get injections to cover up the pain or get rid of inflammation.
Let's address the actual cause of the pain so that when you hit 60, you're not having to sleep in your recliner. And You're able to stand up straight. And You're able to do all the shopping that you want without pain. We are able to push through a lot of pain that seems relatively minor that causes bigger problems later on.
I love helping people figure out exactly what it is going on in their low back or their hips that's causing this problem. I find the root cause of your pain by seeing how you're walking, seeing how strong your muscles are, seeing your muscle length, and how well things stabilize together. By doing a comprehensive physical exam, seeing how somebody moves, I can help correct back pain when it happens while you lay flat or if it bothers you more often. I love helping people give back from having to lay in a recliner, to be able to lay in a bed and or back to doing their favorite things.
It is possible to fix it, obviously it's easier for you to resolve these things when it's just the first early sign. So like I said, if you've been dealing with or suffering from something that just bothers you when you do one specific task. If you're modifying that task or one position, there are ways to correct that. You don't have to keep avoiding it and you don't have to wait for the pain to become so intense that you can no longer ignore it. Pain is definitely our body's way of telling us that something is wrong.
Although I'm all for anything that helps you move better and get around better, if you're using creams or ice or things like that to help you throughout your day, that is just covering up the pain. Wouldn’t it be better to find out what the root cause of the pain, so that you don't have to rely on those things every day of your life. I hope that this information is helpful. If you have any questions about your specific situation, please do not hesitate to send me a direct message or leave a comment in the comment section below.
I hope you're having a great day.
