How To Stop Back Of Knee Pain While Walking

Having a workout partner is amazing. Good workout partners push you to be stronger, they help you keep good form, they help you stay motivated on your health journey. And you both get to celebrate y’all wins and encourage through y’all challenges.

But sometimes your workout buddy gets to be the person that annoys you enough to see the doctor that you’ve needed to see for months. At least that’s how Kay’s story started. Kay has been working out with her workout buddy for years.  During the pandemic they started to walk nightly.  A few months into the pandemic Kay started to limp because the back of her knee hurt when she walked.
She couldn’t remember any kind of specific injury so she thought she could just walk it off.  Unfortunately the knee pain lasted so long that she started to get worried but she was brushing off her workout partner's suggestions to see a doctor. Finally Kay had to admit that she wasn’t able to push herself during her workouts so she wasn’t seeing any progress with her workouts. Secretly she was getting really worried especially since the back of her knee wasn’t hurting just while she walked; now it was hurting when she was standing washing the dishes and while she was playing with her kids. She iced her knee nightly after stretching. She tried everything she could think of but nothing helped.

She was now telling her workout partners she wasn’t going to the doctor because she didn't want to hear that there was nothing that could be done or worse that she needed surgery. The good news is that her workout partner buddy saw my post about a discovery visit. She thought this type of visit would be perfect for Kay, who was afraid to go in and pay money to have a doctor tell her there was nothing that she could do or that she would need surgery.

When I came to Kay’s home for the discovery visit I knew instantly just from how she walked that knee pain could be helped. After we talked for a little bit she was able to tell me how worried she really had been about her knee.  So just to hear someone say that she could stop the knee pain took a huge weight off of her shoulder.

We set up a time for a full evaluation which would be a much more detailed and hands-on assessment of her knee. The truth is there can be many causes for the back of your knee to hurt while you walk. Sometimes it’s directly related to the knee that hurts and sometimes it’s caused by another body part adding extra stress to the back of the painful knee. This is why a hands on assessment and a movement assessment is needed to find the root cause of pain in the back of your knee.

By the end of the evaluation we found the root cause of Kay’s pain, I was able to show her things she could start doing that day to stop the pain. We created a plan that not only was going to stop her knee pain but life proof her knee.

We are 8 weeks out from Kay’s evaluation now and she not only has no knee pain but she is back to her regular workouts with her partner.

Now that she has the benefit of hindsight Kay told me she wished she had come in sooner because she missed out on so many things waiting for the knee pain to spontaneously go away. Kay is back to chasing her kids around the house, doing her housework...all her favorite things without worrying about pain in the back of her knee.
