It is not your fault! Your body is not defective and you didn't do anything wrong. Those are the first few sentences I’ve said to countless women who have come to see me with injuries that don’t seem to heal. But what were they supposed to think? Especially after they went to a doctor, chiropractor and a physical therapist and they still have pain or limitations in their knee. Many of my clients had a doctor tell them matter factly that in 10 years they’d need a joint replacement. Of course they think something is wrong with their bodies. That is exactly what my client thought. She didn't even start seeing me for her knee since she thought her knee was a lost cause. She came in for her shoulder. But while we were treating her shoulder she started talking about her knee. She’d torn her meniscus while running in college. She had surgery and did all the physical therapy but her knee never felt the same. Her surgeon told her the surgery was a success. She completed what she was told to do for physical therapy. So she assumed that was as good as her knee was going to get. She felt mostly okay right after leaving physical therapy but slowly over the years her knee aches more and walking long distances just doesn’t feel quite right. She’s nervous that she’ll re-injure her knee so she stopped working out all together. She hasn’t attempted to run in years. Now she is just waiting until the surgeon says she can have a joint replacement for the pain to stop. I asked if she minded if I looked at her knee. After doing a short exam I was able to show her muscle imbalances that were straining her knee. I was able to show her a few stretches to try; she noticed a little change in how her knee felt. After that she was still a little sceptical but she was willing to see if we could help her knee. We came up with a personalized exercise program that targeted all the muscle she needed to stabilize her knee while doing the exercises she loved. After a few weeks she was shocked at the difference in her knee. It took her a few months but she is back to being able to run a short distance without any discomfort in her knee and she is comfortable with the exercises enough to continue making progress on her own.
