Natural Remedies For Back Pain And Inflammation

I've receive many phone calls like this....Does this sound like you?

You woke up to searing lower back pain that makes the idea of getting out of bed unbearable. As you lay in bed trying to figure out what you could have possibly done to hurt yourself this badly. While also trying to stop the crazy images  of x-rays, MRIs, injections, surgery and wheelchairs from going through your mind. Eventually, you work up enough courage to try and sit up. Once you are up you have a severe back ache that feels better if you stand  versus sitting. Your backache   gets worse when you stand for a long time, or sit for a long time or sit on your couch at all. Everything you do throughout the day is determined by how you think your back will respond. It's exhausting and overwhelming.

The good news is that back pain doesn't have to continue to run your life. I help active adult overcome back pain to get back to living their best life.
Here is the truth about back pain. Whether we are talking about a mild backache or severe back pain the way you move has a direct relationship to how your back feels.

Here's what I mean.

Your spine is made up of a lot of little bones that are connected by muscles. When muscles are tense they pull on these bones, squishing everything in the middle. Under normal situations this squish and relax motion is how your spine gets nutrition. Nutrients are pushed and pulled into the the disc between the bones keeping them healthy.

The problem is that we sit for extended periods of time, squishing the discs for hours every day over years. The stress on the disc and bones adds up causing the muscles around the discs to constantly be “on” ie constantly pulling so they loose the ability to relax.  The constant tension makes seemingly small tasks like pick up light weight items off the floor or simply holding your body upright very painful.

This was my long winded way of saying that for most people it's not one event that caused you to wake up with severe low back pain it was several small events over a long time.

So how do you help back pain? You can relive low back pain from your home.  Since I know that many people don't want to take medication or have back surgery, so I put together 7 Natural Remedies that will stop back pain.
  1. Ice your back for 10 minutes: The ice will reduce the swelling and irritation in the back. For the best results try helping your back relax while the ice is on by laying in the most comfortable position you can find ie your back, stomach (with pillows under your hips) or on your side (pillow between your knees).
  2. Breath normally: Try not to hold your breath. When we get scared or uncomfortable we tend to hold our breath; this adds pressure to your spine. Remind yourself to breathe.
  3. Move Naturally: Once you're up try to move as naturally as possible.  Like I said before your back muscles are clamping down on your spine so try your best not to hold your body stiff as a rail. The more naturally you move the more your back muscles will relax.
  4. Stand or lay down: Stand or lay down versus sitting throughout the day. Sitting is inevitable throughout your day just try to limit the time you spend sitting because sitting adds more pressure to your spine than standing or laying down.
  5. Gentle stretch: When we wake up in severe pain it is scary to move. When muscles are stretched just to the point of slight pull, not pain, they learn that this motion is safe and they will relax over time.
  6. Walking: The rhythmic motion of natural arm swing helps to calm you back down lower back muscle spasms. Try a light stroll around your neighborhood or mall. I'm not talking about power walking, just a steady even pace walk to get the blood pumping and muscles relaxing. (remember to breath as naturally as possible.)
  7. See a Physical Therapist if the pain lasts longer than 2-3 days or if it simply keeps reoccuring. A Physical Therapist will be able to find the route cause of your back pain, give you tools to prevent the pain from returning in order to keep you playing with your kids, and getting to work on time  😜
Trying one or a combination of these 7 Natural Remedies will help your back pain getting you to get back to planning your next weekend get away.
