What I learned laying on the floor with my kids

The first thing that I learned when I was lying down on the floor playing with my kids is that if you pick up your three month old and pretend to fly an airplane then you will also have to fly your four-year-old. On a serious note..What was amazing to me was that by simply laying flat on the floor I noticed how tight and weak my neck felt. But that uncomfortable feeling didn’t stop at my neck. I could feel how tight my shoulders were and how my upper back actually hurt being flat against the floor. I wasn’t able to lay flat for longer than a few minutes with my knees my leg straight before my lower back started to hurt forcing me to bend my knees.

In short...I felt like a train wreck! You might wonder why it matters if you can lay flat. Well laying flat is simply placing your body proper body alignment. You should be able to maintain an upright posture without pain or difficulty because it is the position where your body has to do the least amount of work. The main point is up right posture helps reduce wear and tear on your body reducing injuries in the long run.

Have you tried it yet? Did you lay on the floor? If you experience the same issues when you lay flat on the floor there is hope! Every last ache and pain I felt by simply laying on the floor has a fix and it doesn’t involve a total overhaul, medications or surgery.

Many of these aches stem from the poor posture that started during pregnancy and have continued as I nurse my daughter.

The question is always where to start so here are a few suggestions:
  1. I would start by simply sit and stand up straight. If you are nursing set yourself up in the least hunched forward positioning you can create the is still comfortable.
  2. Then start a general stretching program. I encourage people to try yoga. This is great practice that can be completed at home, in semi-private groups, or in large group settings.
  3. Start a general exercise program. Anything from Pilates to lifting weights is a fabulous way to get your body moving.
  4. Get an assessment from a physical therapist. Having a movement specialist look at how you move, assess your body alignment is the fastest and safest way for you to eliminate the random aches, improve your posture and get you back to all your favorite activities with limitations.

I completely understand that it is not always easy to find the time to see a specialist especially for something that seems minor.
To make this easier I’m offering a $20 full body diagnostic. When you leave this 20 minute visit I you will have a diagnosis based on a movement assessment. This will get you the information you need to get back to all your favorite activities.

Simply email me that you are ready to schedule your full body diagnostic.  If you still need more information feel free to email any questions or check out my other blog posts.
