What is the best running shoe?

Everyone who runs wants to know what makes the best running shoe. How your foot hits the ground is very important when you run.
Good shoes can prevent knee, hip and back pain injuries.
The difficult thing about shoes is that what makes the shoe good for one person makes it bad for another.
So how do you pick the best shoe for you?
Here are few things to consider when buying shoes:
  1. Check that all your toes have enough room i.e your longest toe has room to move in the shoe and that the shoe is wide enough for all your toes even after  your feet swell during your run or workout.
  2.  Check that the shoe only bends at the ball of your foot versus the middle of your foot.
  3. Try twisting the shoe to see if you can easily bend the shoe right and left. If you are looking for a supportive shoe then you don't want to be able to bend the shoe. More bend equals less support.
  4. Try on the shoe and run and/or jump in them to see how they feel while you are in the store. They should be comfortable.
If you are trying to determine how much support you personally need from a  running shoe; then have a Physical Therapist assess your running mechanics. Yes, your running mechanics. How your foot hits the ground while running is going to be different from how it hits the ground while you walk or simply standing.
I hope this information helps you feel more comfortable the next time you are buying running shoes.
