Just an ordinary day of cleaning your home when you bend over to pick up a shoe..when BAM! Your lower back grabs you leaving you with a sharp searing pain that runs all the way down to your foot. You are very familiar with this feeling...it's your disc going out AGAIN. Now you are looking at having to spend a week on muscle relaxers laying flat on your back. Until finally the pain subsides and you can get back to your life. Only to have the pain return after taking your groceries from the car into your house.
I mean...How dare you try to take care of your family by cleaning your house and buying groceries! All jokes aside. Having reoccurring back pain was very frustrating for Karen.
Karen is a mom of 3 boys, middle school to high school aged, so is constantly cleaning and buying groceries. As she was telling me the story of how her slipped disc pain kept coming back over and over again. She was noticeable becoming emotional. I asked her, “What is the most concerning thing about this back issue.” “It’s not the actual pain because I can power through to get everything done.” she said, “ However, I have less patience with my kids.” I'm constantly yelling at them for things that really aren’t a big deal. And it makes me feel like a horrible parent.” “I know that I’m afraid of what the pain means and I'm just on edge, which isn't their fault.”
She went on to tell me she was really concerned that she would need to have back surgery eventually and/or that she would be stuck in a wheelchair like her mother sooner than later.
Her story struck a chord with me….parents deal with “parenting fail” moments daily without the added stress of returning slipped disc pain.
Karen came into her evaluation a few days later. We looked at how she was moving, talked about her daily activities, assessed her whole body strength and mobility which allowed us to discover the root cause of her returning slipped disc pain. When she left the evaluation she had a clear plan with a start and a finish with the goal to stop the vicious cycle of pain from returning.
We are about halfway through Karen’s plan. She is cleaning and grocery shopping without a care in the world. She has far less mommy guilt from having a short temper. BUT we are not stopping treatment here..no we are going to life proof her back. She is even excited going to the park with her boys to ride bikes...something she would never have considered before.
